Practice in Wilmington is unique for a city of its size, largely because so many major businesses are organized in Delaware and look to Delaware lawyers for advice in business and corporate transactions and for representation in litigation in our state and federal courts. These transactions and cases often garner national attention due to their significance in the corporate world. The popularity of Delaware as a venue for complex litigation, including major corporate, intellectual property and bankruptcy cases, is consistent with its number one ranking among all states in the U.S. Chamber Institute for Legal Reform's 2007 Survey of State Liability Systems. It is unusual to find a practice of such sophistication and national significance in a location that offers, as does Wilmington, the many advantages of a smaller metropolitan area, including affordable housing, short commutes and genuine collegiality among members of the bar. We hire our first-year associates primarily, but not exclusively, from our summer program and from the ranks of judicial clerks. Lateral associates are hired on a case-by-case basis as needs arise for experienced lawyers in a particular practice area. We attempt to expose our associates to a variety of assignments, balancing the lawyer’s aptitude and interests with firm needs. Associates are encouraged to assume considerable responsibility early in their careers, and they advance as rapidly as their demonstrated abilities will allow.
